new old toy: sharp zaurus sl-5500
By booyaa | November 27, 2005
i just recently took receipt of a sharp zaurus thanks to my generous mate dave (thanks dude). it’s a fairly nifty little device which will run various forms of embedded linux: sharp’s own and the open source community variety.
at the moment i’m running sharp’s own because it works with the wifi card (finally! but more on this in a moment) and comes bundle with opera for embedded devices. this makes it an ideal web tablet for walking around the house with.
so without further ado i’ll post some pictures…
here’s the zaurus in its dock, which i don’t use much at the moment. with the right software qtopia desktop or intellisync you can use it to sync up pim thingies if you’re so inclined
and here’s the wifi card, which took awhile to get working
for some unknown reason (perhaps the card is getting old or something) i couldn’t get zaurusos (which is what i think the sharp linux distro is called) to detect the wifi card (buffalo air station wli2-cf-s11).
after a quick discussion with dave as to where pcmcia card configuration files might live, i was able to “google with confidence”. and after a few attempts i finally got it working. so i thought i’d share the knowledge…
how to get your buffalo wli2-cf-s11 wlan cf card to play nice with your zaurusos
first off make sure you’ve got terminal or some similar shell app installed.
su cardctl ident - make a note of the device description, manfid cd /etc/pcmcia vi wlan-ng.conf
add the following lines:
card "BUFFALO WLI2-CF-S11" manfid 0x026f, 0x030b bind "prism2_cs"
