My first tentative steps into video streaming
By booyaabooyaabooyaa | August 13, 2006
This weekend I fiddled around with VLC (on the Mac) and was able to streaming video to my Zaurus. It was pretty groovy until the Zaurus ran out of memory five minutes later (the stock Sharp ROM leaves very little free memory on an SL-5500).
On the Mac (the streaming server) I used the following command line (there’s a Wizard to simplify this, but I’m a CLI kinda guy):
/path/to/VLC -v <audio/videostream> --sout udp:<client ip address>
One of the guys at the Open Embedded Software Foundation has compiled a 0.8 for Zaurus Sharp ROM 3.x you can get it here.
On the Zaurus (the stream client) I used the following:
/path/to/vlc udp:<ip address of streaming server>
VLC has the ability to server Video on Demand (VOD) which could be really groovy, although I can’t really justify it at the moment. I mean do we really need the ability to watch pre-recorded programmes and/or live TV in every room? Perhaps if we had a Tablet PC it might become viable, you could bring it into the Kitchen as reference, not that we watch any cooking programmes mind you. If I do decide to tinker with VOD (very likely) I check out CyTV first, as may have done all the donkey work for me.
At some point I’ll get around to writing a review for this software and my experiences with VLC’s VOD.
