I’ve calculated that I should have completed my ten week training course to go from non-runner to being able to run for 40 minutes. This means I should able to attend my first 5K race! Hopefully the Bushey Park time trial should still be running (no pun intended).
In other news I was disappointed to discover the Great North Run was in fact a half marathon (I was hoping it would be a marathon). I still plan to run it next year as this year’s is on the 1st of October and I’m not quite ready for a half marathon yet. I think it would be a good warm up for my 2008 London Marathon
I’m keeping the Paris Marathon as a my back up, as I will know by December if I’m in the London Marathon.
I’ve come cross the following interesting web links:
- The Running for fitness site has a large collection of running calculators. You can work out your race finish times based on a variety of factors. Whilst it won’t mean much to a new runner, it will be useful to those who have a heart rate monitor, pedometre or know what the heck a VO2max when it’s at home.
- The Serpentine Running Club’s marathon training guide is a good start if you want to run one. (via ovalsea.com)
- The CRN are one of my favourite and authoritative running blogs at the moment
- It’s Not Supposed To Be Easy - how to think like a champ, setting goals beyond “just finishing”.
- 100 Beginner Running Tips
Oh and I read (I can’t remember where, may have been one of my running magazines), but it recommended using Spandex pants under your running shorts to avoid chaffing. I’ll be trying this along with non-cotton trunks (boxers with support) and see which ones work best. Obviously I won’t know until I start running longer distances.

hi booyaa,
Thanks for the kind mention re marathon training schedule which I hope will be useful to many people. I wish you all the best with your running progress. I think I’ll read your entries every now and then - especially re running gadgets which I’d love to use in the future but can’t afford at the moment:-(
