And relax… aka Running progress: Holiday
By booyaabooyaabooyaa | September 29, 2006
Howdy all! I’ve just returned from a two week holiday in the south of Spain, Nerja (near MÃ laga).
And yes I did run during my holiday
The area is very mountainous with steep gradients, to give you some idea, the height difference between my starting point and midpoint was over 100 feet! I was lucky to maintain any kind of consistent pace, but I didn’t think it was enough to procede with weeks 4 (walk 1 minute, run 4 x 5) and 5 (walk 1 minute, run 4 x 6 times) of my training programme.
I didn’t want to stop running altogether, as this would have lost me any progress I made. So I decided to go easy and walk 2 minutes, run 3 x 6 times.
On my last run of the holiday, I did try to go for a walk 1 and run 4, but after the 3rd rep I started having serious difficulties with my breathing. I’ve run that hill several times before, but this time around I was literally gasping for air (I was close to passing out). I’m still feeling a bit spooked by that run and hope that it never happens again.
I could only attribute my problems from running too quickly in the 1st or 2nd rep because I managed to beat my personal best for a mile.
Anyway it’s good to be back on level ground. I highly recommend Nerja for running if you want to build up your stamina! I’m eager to see how my first run is tomorrow to see if I’ve improved some what.
Update: I found a map on the Internet of Nerja (via Nerja tourist board), so I’ve drawn my route in blue with thicker lines representing the steep gradients.
