Link roll extravaganza!
By booyaa | November 18, 2006
Whilst I’ll be the first to admit running has somewhat taken over and pwned my life. I’m trying to rekindle my other hobbies of gardening and photography. So without further ado it’s booyaa’s weekly link roll extravaganza!
Running
- Lifehacker hacking marathons - Blaine Moore (aka Mr. RunToWin) makes an appearance in the comments.
- Which leads nicely to Mr. Moore, who has updated his excellent collection of Marathon articles into one tidy summary page.
- Whilst searching on google I came across Hal Higdon’s Marathon training guide. Looks like good stuff.
- Now I knew the BBC site was a great information source, but I had no idea I would strike paydirt with the following marathon related articles.
- As always the CRN have come up with the goods:
- Joe Ely (guest writer) has come up with a spreadsheet that determines the correct amount of layers to wear based on the outside temperature.
- Huh?!? The CRN’s Jeanne has written a great piece arguing for and against wearing headphones whilst running. I’d also recommend Blaine’s blog post response.
- Night running seems to be another one of those love hate things in running. Runner’s world (US edition) has two articles singing its praise:
- Light up the night - the joys of running at night
- Run to the dark side - the benefits of pre-dawn or after dark running.
- Finally I really dislike having to enter my running stats manually, often in duplicate if not triplicate. So I was pleased to discover that the following sites have javascript badges that maybe remove the need for me to do this in future: RunningAHEAD and justdoing.it (geddit?). I’ll be providing an indepth review of RunningAHEAD’s sites in the not too distant future. And justdoing.it takes your Nike+ data and transforms it into an RSS feed and graphical badge.
Gardening
- Growing garlic in pots - Allotment 21 have decided to grow Purple Wight variety. I’ve stuck one of our garlic bulbs in the dirt for fun.
- When I’m filthy rich from blogging, I’m gonna buy me a plant wall. Greenfortune’s website doesn’t do it justice. Luckily inhabitat’s blog post does.
Photography
- The Digital Photography school has a great tip to use your digital compact’s zoom to preview image sharpness.
- Photojojo (my current favourite photography web2.0 site) have a great tip on taking impromptu portraits. Although I’m not sure giving out sweets would go down well here…
- Lifehacker’s Geek to Live series have a great post on taking better cameraphone photos.
I think I’ve come to understand why I enjoy reading running blogs over my gardening and photography blogs, especially with the likes of CRN and Run To Win. The quality is up there with the pros such as Runner’s world. In fact I would say that in some cases the pros are too noisy and their marketing values are off the scale. There’s a great photography tip that can be applied to all of this, it’s what a good photographer should ask before they press the button: what’s the message?
Also I think that my type of running (medium to long distance) appears to be the most popular type of running so I have a great choice of blogs to choose from. I’ve yet to find the same for my gardening and photography specialities: containers and still life/abstract respectively.
