The memoirs of a rebel gardener

    By booyaa | November 20, 2006

It’s been a while since the last gardening update, there’s very little growing in our our balcony. The Marigolds and Geraniums are doing their best. The balcony is mostly brown and looking decidedly dead. Thanks to the bizarre Autumn we’re having, the bulbs have started shooting early, so I suspect when Winter kicks in I’ll lose all of them.

Yesterday’s gardening involved planting the Allium Schubertii which we snagged from Waitrose at the reduced price of £1.99 down from £4.99, bargain! I’ve stuck them in the zinc planter that had the nicotiana.

Gosh, looking at the picture from this Summer, it’s hard to believe it’s the same balcony!

    A sad looking balcony

The advice on the box was to plant them six inches deep and six apart. Being the rebel gardener that I am I planted all five about three inches deep! Rock on!

I gave everyone a drink provided they passed the finger test. This involves digging your finger into the soil about an inch, if it feels moist don’t water.

Finally I pruned down the geraniums, I’m hoping they grow back less stalky and more bushy!
