seedling watch day backfill: sowing the seeds of an idea
By booyaa | May 6, 2008
sorry for the cheesy tag line, won’t happen again guvnor, honest.
on the 22nd of april we commenced with our seeding project. pretty much everything we’re growing from seed will go to the allotment with a few exceptions. i hope to use the seedling watch to fill in the gaps between allotment visits, rather than twitter posts.
so far we’ve managed to seed the following:
orange banana tomato seedling (for allotment):
|
chili anaheim seedlings (allotment):
|
garten perle toms (allotment):
|
sweet basil seedlings (allotment/home):
|
last week we bought an electric propagator after finding out that the room temperature in our living room and kitchen (our prime germinating spots) were too cold. we’ve already seen amazing progress since we started using it, the seed growth rate has gone up, even those that we wrote off as dead (after the toms and basils seedlings started to appear) have started to seed.
as you can see from the picture there are seven individual pots with plastic tops. the red bits at the top of the plastic tops are the vents. the green tray that holds the pots is where all the magic takes place and is the bottom warmer. *waits until the giggling stops*
since the biggest threat to germination is the sudden drop of temperature at night time we keep the propagator on then, during the day it’s off with the vents open.
mrs. booyaa’s started using the dehydrator again, so i’ve conscripted that into propagating service, and have a few seed trays cooking on top.
